EUGENE, OR -- The men's 1500 meter race turned out to be an odd and shocking race. None of the pre race favorites: Bryan Berryhill, Gabe Jennings, and Alan Webb, placed in the top 3. Alan Webb hung back in the rear of the pack for the majority of race until the last lap, he started to pick off some runners with his usual kick. However, once he made his move to the front, he was too far out of position to have a shot at winning or placing in the top 3. Colorado State's Bryan Berryhill led for the early parts of the the race. Then Stanford's Gabe Jennings made an early, hard charge for the win, but faded the last 25 meters of the race as Andy Downin, Virginia's own and ex-Lafayete High School runner Seneca Lassiter, and Paul McMullen made a quick push at the line to take the first three spots with a fading Jennings and hard charging Webb coming in behind. Only Lassiter has made the "A" standard to run at the world championships next month.

Mr. Webb should not hang his head down as he is undoubtedly the greatest high school middle distance runner that our nation has ever seen. He will bring these amazing times with him once he steps foot in Ann Arbor next year as he begins his freshmen year of college at the University of Michigan: 47 400, 1:47 800, 2:23 1000, 3:38 1500, 3:53 mile, and a 8:45 2 mile. As a high schooler already running world caliber times, Webb has a very bright future ahead of him and MileStat.com will continue keeping track of his progress. It has been a pleasure covering an athlete of his greatness and we all should thank him and other great high school runners such as Dathan Ritzenhein in starting a large resurgence in distance running in our country. Who will be the next Jim Ryun? Already answered. Alan Webb. Who will be the next Alan Webb? No one...

Alan Webb comments on the race (from USATF)...

"I think it was a bit too much but it was fun and I guess I am not ready yet. I'm excited about the future and it didn't go according to plan, I would like to have won the race but you can't win them all. It will be a lesson learned that will give me a bit of motivation for my summer training. It wasn't my day. Everything didn't work out as I planned. I enjoyed myself this week and I learned a lot. I have never done it before and I have to take the positives out of the race. It didn't go the way I wanted it to, but you have to live and learn. I plan on being around for awhile. I am looking forward to being around for awhile. I'm going to take some time off and then I look forward to running cross country in the maize and blue (will be a freshman at Michigan)."
