Fork Union boys & The Potomac School girls take team crowns, Smith wins 4 titles at VISAA Champs

Fork Union boys and The Potomac School girls were crowned private school state champions at Saturday's VISAA State Indoor Track and Field Championships in Richmond.

Norfolk Collegiate freshmen Nefertiti Smith was spectatular with four individual titles in the long jump (18'6.50"), triple jump (37'10'), 55 meter hurdles (8.31), and 55 meter dash (7.33). Smith's efforts helped her win both Most Valuable Runner and Most Valuable Field Events Performer.

Johns Ross (pictured right by David Fleenor) of The Potomac School might have had the best individual race of the meet clocking a solo 9:20.51 3200 as he lapped the entire field.

However, it was one of the lap-ees in Fork Union's Jeremy Haney who was named Most Valuable Runner of the meet as the 3200 was his third race of the meet after winning the 1600 (4:31.88) and 500 (1:08.09) meter races earlier before helping pace along his teammates Darren Simpson and Patrick Hayes to take the next three places after Ross in the 3200.

Haney was not the only Fork Union athlete with a big day to help the team pull away from challenger St. Christopher's as Austin Ofoma leaped to first place showings in both the long jump (22'8.75") and triple jump (43'6.75"). As a result, Ofoma was selected as the Most Valuable Field Events Performer for the boys.

Barbara Strehler of Trinity was a runaway winner in the 1600 (5:09.73) and 3200 (11:38.09), while Anneka Wilson of The Potomac School was a runner-up to Strehler in both distance events and helped her team follow up their outdoor state title from last May. Patricia Brandt also played a key role for The Potomac School as the 500 meter champion and anchor leg for the winning 4x400 meter relay.
