Trinity Christian School Makes It A Sweep at DAC

The Delaney Athletic Conference tends to live in the shadows of the much larger conferences in the northern and central regions of Virginia, but it has turned out some competitive cross country of late and is worthy of some attention.

The conference has been dominated in recent years by Trinity Christian School of Fairfax whose boys have won three straight titles and whose girls have won two of the last three coming into today's championship meet at Burk Lake Park.

This season, the Trinity boys have been holding off the onslaught of a team from Fredericksburg Christian at each the prior conference meets. The Trinity girls were looking to take out the dual threat of Highland School of Warrenton and Foxcroft School of Middleburg who both have been getting faster and faster throughout the season. Today's meet added an extra challenge of unseasonably warm temperatures that had some runners feeling uneasy ahead of their race.

The Trinity boys once again delivered, led by stellar sophomore Riley Fletcher, who scorched the 2.98 mile course in 16:43. Second and third place were taken by Trinity runners Connor Ames and Joshua Gilchrist. They easily held off Frederickburg Christian and Tandem Friends for their fourth straight conference championship.

The Girls race was won by Trinity sophomore Kayla Shelkey with a winning time of 19:22. She easily defeated Mia Tremblay of Highland School who came in second almost a minute later, closely followed by Trinity's Lauren Proulx. Trinity also took the 6th and 8th spots and easily took the team title over Highland school, with Foxcroft School coming in a close third.

Despite Trinty's DAC success over the past few seasons, Coach Kevin Ames does not take wins for granted. "Whether we are racing our conference competition, or schools that are five times our size, I am always uneasy before a meet." he commented. "But the key for us today was just mental toughness. I knew if we just calmly executed our race strategy, and didn't try to do too much on a warm day, we would be fine."

Most of the Delaney Conference teams will run at the VISAA State championships next week in the Division 2 race. The Trinity boys took second last year and will be doing their best to unseat perennial VISAA D2 powerhouse Peninsula Catholic.
