Webb opener: 15:18!!!

WOODBERRY FOREST, VA -- The 2000 Woodberry Forest Invitational marked the beginning of South Lakes HS senior Alan Webb's final high school cross country season. Folks, lets enjoy this ride while we can because we may never see a runner of this great amount of talent to ever grace the Virginia High School running scene ever again in our lifetime. Webb started the year off impressively winning the boys' race in a time of 15:18. It was a new course record which was previously 16:00 by a runner with the last name of Keino. If anyone remembers Kip Keino, that puts in perspective how magnficient Webb's race was as he crushed Keino's record by 42 seconds.

Louisa County HS (AA) sophomore Daniel Kane crossed the lined 55 seconds later in a time of a 16:13, as a strong last mile helped him pull away from the rest of the chase pack.

There was a close battle for the boys' team title as Lake Braddock HS (AAA) just edged out South Lakes HS (AAA) and Albemarle with a team score of 60 to South Lakes's 62 and Albemarle's 65. Led by seniors Dave Vitto's and Jimmy Judge's 5th and 6th place finishes and having their entire top 5 in the top 20, helped the Bruins get the win.

In the girls' race, Lake Braddock sophomore Kelly Swain led literally from the gun and never looked back as she cruised to a victory and course record in a time of 19:07. Her Lake Braddock squad also won the girls' title and they had it easier off than their boys' squad, scoring 63 points compared to second place Louisa County's 90 points.
