Radford's Track Squad Competed in the 49ers Classic; Six Highlanders Set School Records

Charlotte, N.C. -- The Highlanders outdoor track team competed this past weekend in the Charlotte 49er Classic at the Irwin Belk Track. Six Highlanders set school records.

On the men's side, senior Goran Nava (Castello Di Brianza, Italy) grabbed a victory in the 3000 (8:22.37) and placed second in the 1500 (3:47.03) meter run. Both times set new school records.

In the field events, junior TJ Stahl (Vienna, Va.) earned two top five finishes and set two school records. He placed third in the hammer throw with a distance of 176'04.00" and fifth in the shot put with a throw of 49'07.25". Freshman Dilyn Gerber (Camden, Mich.) placed eighth in the shot put while sophomore Jeremiah Spence (Vienna, Va.) took a ninth place spot in the hammer throw. Spence also tabbed a ninth in the discus throw setting a school record of 139'11.00". In the javelin throw sophomore Sean McGuire (Auburn Wash.) and freshman Ben Ralls (Franklin, Tenn.) placed fourth and eighth respectively. Freshman Wayne Odom (Dinwiddle, Va.) set a school record to place sixth in the pole vault with a height of 13'05.25".

In the running events for the women, senior Maurika Quarles (Manassas, Va.) set a school record in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.57 and placed fifth in the event. Freshman Maria Geary (Harrisonburg, Va.) finished ninth in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:38.67. Sophomore Tricia Coughlin (Penacook, N.H.) set a school record in the heptathlon and grabbed third place with 4, 118 points. She also set a record in the javelin heptathlon with a distance of 108'00.00". The 4x400 meter relay team finished tenth and ran a time of 3:58.44.

In the field, freshman Tiffany Evans (Dumfries, Va.) had three top ten finishes. She placed third in the discuss (127'09.00") and hammer throw (159'06.00") while finishing sixth in the shot put (42'11.75").

The Highlanders will travel to Raleigh, N.C. March 26-27 to compete in the Raleigh Relays.
