It's going to be a couple weeks before we get to see his true track speed but this Saturday we got a sneak peak of Sam Affolder's track ability. He ran well all cross season but late in the season he emerged as the top dog in the entire state. This Saturday, he solidified his spot as one of the fastest on the track as well.
From 11am until 3pm he went 4:11 in a solo 1600m win, ran 2:30 in the 1K for the win, and anchoring the Viking 4x400 in a 51.8 split.
That range of speed should spell some big points for the Vikings come the state meet. It also opens the opportunity for a more dynamic state triple by the Loudoun Valley Viking. Though his true speciality will likely remain the Mile, he is definitely showing us that he could win a state title in anything from 500m to 3200m indoors.
Sam and the other Loudoun Valley athletes who went late into the XC post-season will take the next few weeks off and begin building back up for a late January peak at the VA Showcase. After that it looks like their could be another meet prior to states and nationals.
