West Springfield could be one of the most overlooked powerhouses in our state these past six years. Even after the departure of Caroline Alcorta they have remained a formidable foe in the distance heavy Northern Region.
This outdoor season they and more specifically their distance relays are one of the most anticipated things for us.
This past indoor season the quartet of Anna Marcucci, Chase Kappeler, Lillian Stephens, and Sarah Coleman won the 6A 4x800 state title in 9:12.50.That time is the second fastest in Boo Williams and is also a state meet record for the 6A meet.
Individually the Spartans performed well also. Kappeler was the runner-up in the 1600 by just 0.41 seconds and her teammate Coleman was the runner-up in the 1K by just 0.17 seconds. Stephens and Kappeler were also 4-5 in that race.
They went on to finish 6th in the entire country and finish as All-Americans in the 4x800 at New Balance Nationals.
