VHSL State Championships 5A/6A Track & Fied

Group 5A Girls

First is the 5A girls competition. The biggest races here will be between Nansemond River's Kori Carter and Mills' Godwin's Britton Wilson. Though they will not directly race each other they will both be running to break records and out-shine the other. Luckily for us this rivalry will not end this year with both girls only being juniors.

5A Girls Virtual Meet

Britton Wilson has a serious shot at taking home the 400 title and record while Kori Carter will be eyeing the 100 and 300 hurdle records. Britton will also running the 200m dash.

These two ladies should dominate the sprint and hurdle races with strong competition pushing them but it will be a whole other group dominating the distance races for the 5A girls.

Leading the way with respect to potentially doubling this weekend is Albemarle's Ryann Helmers. She is entered as the favorite in both the 1600 & 3200 and will run on Albemarle's third ranked 4x800m relay team.

You have Ellie Desmond (Broad Run), Lily Snow (Deep Run), Bethany Graham (John Champe), Emma Wolcott (Tuscarora), and Ava Hassebrock (Tuscarora) all within striking distance as well. Under seven seconds separates all of these girls in the 1600.

In the 3200 things are also very close with Helmers being chased by Wolcott and Hassebrock who both have run under 10:50 this season.

Relay wise Highland Springs and Nansemond River lead the 4x1. Nansemond River and Potomac Senior lead the 4x4. Glen Allen and J.R. Tucker lead the 4x8 all entering the state competition.

In the field events things will also be exciting with state records being on the chopping block. That is the case most in the pole vault competition where Stafford's Gennifer Hirata is vaulting. She owns a personal best of 12-9 and is chasing the state record of 13-3.

In the horizontal jumps we will get to see some great competitions with the Stone Bridge duo of Zoe Rice and Natalie Barnes attempting to sweep them yet again. They will have tough competition truly making it a state meet atmosphere. In the final jump, the high jump, it is Potomac Senior's Khalia Lyons leading the way.

Over in the throws we will have Midajah Davis (Patrick Henry) and Jalani Davis (Bethel) battling it out in the shot and Gabrielle Holliday (J.R. Tucker) taking on Megan Mann (Lee-Davis) in the discus.
