LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA--Kayla Davis (Run U Xpress) ran in a big 400 against Athing Mu (Trenton TC, NJ) and Kimberly Harris (Buford, GA) at the VA Showcase.  Competing at the age group level since she was 7 it's been extremely rare for her to see strong competition.

Tactics played a big part in this race as the three stars broke at the 150 meter mark.  Davis had gotten ahead of Harris who was to her right in lane 5.  Davis also seemed to be ahead of Mu on her inside, however the two ran into each other slightly on the break allowing Harris to move ahead of them.  Coming off the turn both Mu and Davis tried to swing wide to take the lead.  Both girls were able to pass Harris, but Davis was not able to get a lead on Mu to assume the lead.

Mu was able to pull away from Davis and run 52.55 in a US#5 All-Time Indoor Performance.  Davis took 2nd in 53.30 good for a new North Carolina State Record and a US#12 All-Time Indoor Performance.

Ariah Graham (Wakefield) was the only other athlete in North Carolina history to break 54 seconds for the 400m indoors.  Graham ran 53.95 in 2012 en route to a New Balance Indoor National Title in the event.

Davis will be back in action tomorrow in the 200m where she'll have a shot at the 200m indoor state record of 23.47 set by Anna Cockrell in 2016 at New Balance Indoor Nationals.  Davis holds an indoor best of 24.33 from 7th grade in the 200m.
