Bethel girls, Tatu perform well in elite meet

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - A group of talented Bethel girls and Thomas Dale junior Alex Tatu traveled up to the Seton Hall Invitational during the holidays to compete against a very competitive field and performed exceptionally well.

The Lady Bruins had outstanding performances from individuals and their relays. Their top individual performer was sophomore Britni Spruill who clocked the fastest 55 meter dash time by anyone in the state so far this season with her 7.17 clocking as she took 3rd in the finals. Also performing well in the 55 meter dash was sophomore Christina Ford as she finished 8th with a time of 7.38, which is second fastest in the state. Last year Bethel had a excellent tandem in the sprints of Ara Townes and Asia Carroll that many thought Bethel would never have such a duo ever. Well with these two young sophomores Spruill and Ford already having the two fastest 55 meter dash times in the state this season, the wait may not be that long.

Another strong individual performance came from senior Jessica Cassell who took 2nd in the high jump with a mark of 5'02.00". Hurdler Lavonne Idolette also placed well taking 2nd with a time of 8.64. Also placing was Bethel senior Tekeye Holloway who finished 5th in the long jump with a leap of 16'03.75".

Along with having the top two 55 meter dash times in the state, the Bethel squad got two state bests from their relay squads. The 4x200 squad consisting of Spruill, Patty Beckham, Ford, and Cassell took second place with a time of 1:44.12 which is an astonishing 7 seconds faster the second best time posted by a state team so far this year (Bayside, 1:51, F.I.T. Relays). The 4x400 squad consisting of Spruill, Beckham, Holloway, and Cassell also clocked a state best of 3:59.78 to finish 3rd.

Clocking a 4:14 1600 last spring to finishin runnerup in the Group AAA State Outdoor Track Meet, Thomas Dale's Alex Tatu is headed toward another sensational track season as he clocked a 4:22.09 to finish second in the mile run behind All-American miler Shane Stroup of River Hill (Maryland). Tatu's first mile race of the season is equivalent to running a 4:20.49 1600. Currently, Tatu looks to be the top miler in Group AAA with such a great early season time, though other talented middle distance runners will be challenging the Thomas Dale junior.
