INDIANAPOLIS -- Mary Heinen (Richmond, Virginia) won the girls 17-18 title at the USATF National Junior Olympics XC Championships to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.
Heinen, a senior at Richmond's Maggie Walker High School, won her third straight national title after taking gold in the 15-16 division in 2018 at Reno and in 2017 at Tallahassee. It was a dominant performance by Heinen, who clocked 17:46.2 for 5K on a frigid day in Madison, Wisconsin, to beat club teammate and runner-up Emilia Joyce by almost two minutes. The three-time Virginia high school state champion also led her Richmond Track & Field club to the team title.
