Sean McGorty & The Comeback Summer

Chantilly All-American, Virginia State Champion, and Stanford National Champion Sean McGorty had quite the summer despite all that he's been thru the past year.

Over the past year and a half Sean has had to have three surgeries and quite a few scares to his health. In particular one scare stands out most where he was rushed to the emergency room and found out what he thought was a stress fracture was actually an infection next to his bone in his foot, the same bone he had had surgery on prior. There was even talk about it worsening so bad he may have to have it amputated.

After multiple surgeries and even a hamstring strain months later he was on the road to recovery and building back up his strength. This process essentially took from July of 2019 to April of 2020.

"How one responds to uncertainty has certainly been a theme of the past year. Heading into 2020, there was some uncertainty for me with how my foot would feel coming off three surgeries... I was working back into full fitness when the world hit pause in March because of the coronavirus." - Sean McGorty

Despite all of that Sean trained and went about the normal maintaining of fitness in this new normal and threw down some ridiculous times. The first was his 13:11 5K in late June that at the time was a world leading mark. That was also a personal best for him all-time.

Just a few short weeks later he ran just off of his PR in the 1500 with his 3:37.12 clocking. That time was under a second off of his 3:36.61 best run two years ago.

Finally he closed out his comeback summer with a huge mark and that was as a part of the American Record setting 14:34 4x1500m relay team. Him and his Bowerman Track Club (Nike) teammates ran this as a part of a intra-squad meet.

"With the uncertainty of what our season was going to look like, my coach Jerry Schumacher, created a plan that we had control over, allowing us to maximize our opportunities to race. I'm incredibly thankful that we were able to compete throughout the month of July. Personally, the training I was able to do in the months of May and June was the best of my career. It was rewarding to get back to full strength and I'm very excited to build off of those performances heading into this upcoming 2021 season."

From his athletic career being in jeopardy to three huge performances this has truly been a comeback summer for the Virginia Native, Sean Mcgorty.
