Only four days removed from his wire-to-wire 1600 meter triumph at OHSAA Division I - Hilliard Darby, Nathan Mountain was right back at it on Wednesday evening in Xenia for the Take Flight Distance Classic

Encountering a distinguished field of college and unattached runners in the men's Elite Open Division, Mountain clocked 4:02.54 for the full 1 mile distance (1609.34 meters), representing himself admirably against his more experienced opposition.

The now St. Xavier-Cincinnati grad, who was racing on behalf of Xavier Track Club during this occasion, finished in 5th place overall and threatened both the race leaders late and the elusive sub 4-minute benchmark in the process.

Mountain provided a post-race summary for MileSplit Ohio -

"The race started off just as I expected. For the first two laps I was in the very back and I just went with the pace."

"From the 1,000 meter mark to the 1,400 meter mark I gained momentum and went from last place up to third. With the last 200 I knew that breaking 4 minutes was in question if I finished strong."

"I gave it my all over the last 200 but the lactic acid hit me strong so two guys passed me. I can't complain at all though! I surprised myself big-time tonight!"
