Avery Lewis Wins National Title and All-American Recognition

It was an incredible weekend of competition for Avery Lewis (Friends' Central) at this year's New Balance Nationals Indoor Championship. She earned two All-American recognitions, winning a national title in the long jump and finishing 3rd in the 60m dash.

Lewis kicked off her busy NBN meet by winning her heat of the 60m dash prelims in 7.50 seconds Saturday morning. This advanced her to the semifinal round, which took place early Sunday. She did more than the classic "survive and advance" by running the 3rd fastest semifinals time of 7.38. This locked her in for the national finals that followed that afternoon.

In the finals, Lewis finished 3rd, running 7.39 to earn All-American status and a spot on the podium. It was a very close race, with Brianna Selby (Indian River High School, Virginia) winning in 7.30, McKenzie Travis (Evangelical Christian School, Florida) out leaning Lewis at the line in 7.38 for 2nd place, and Nia Wilson (Greater Atlanta Christian, Georgia) finishing just behind Lewis in 7.41, for 4th place.

The long jump finals also took place on Sunday. After jumping 5.87m (19'-0.25") and 5.88m (19'-0.29") for her first and second attempts, it didn't take Lewis long to find her groove. Lewis won the national title on her third jump by covering 6.22m (20'-5"). Lewis's winning effort was over two and a half inches greater than 2nd place finisher Juliette Laracuente-Huebner's (Mar. Highland, Ohio) 6.15m (20'-2.25") jump.
