Keydet Men Place Ninth at Armory, Women 15th

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Paced by nearly 20 individual personal or seasonal bests, the VMI men's and women's track and field teams each earned a top-15 finish at the Great Dane Classic Friday, hosted by the University of Albany at the historic Armory in New York City.

The Keydet men finished in ninth place Friday out of approximately 47 collegiate programs, while the VMI women placed 15th among roughly the same number of teams.

“I'm very pleased with our performance today at the Armory,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “To come this far and to go against this level of competition is hard enough, but to post this solid of a result is outstanding. The teams that come to this meet are all tough, and to finish ninth and 15th respectively is a very notable result.”

The VMI women were paced by the exploits of Hannah Granger and Jenna Moye, the duo that helped lead VMI to its second-place cross country finish this past fall. Granger set a new school record in the 3,000-meters, finishing third in the event with a time of 10:04.95, while Moye used a tremendous finishing kick over the final lap to move up multiple places and finish fourth. Moye's time of 10:11.09 was a personal best by some 35 seconds for the freshman. In the earlier rounds of that event, fellow freshman Lindsey Carty posted a 25-second PR to finish 16th overall.

Moye and Carty's classmate, Kate Collins, also contributed to the Keydet women's point total Friday, as she cleared 3.45 M (11'3 ¾”) to finish sixth in the pole vault.

On the men's side, Felix Kitur saw action for the first time this season and earned a third-place finish in the 800-meters, crossing the stripe in 1:52.19. The time was an IC4A qualifying mark for the junior, as he looks to round into form after battling injury early this season.

The Keydets saw multiple scorers in two events, the weight throw and the long jump. Chad Lawson continued his strong start to the campaign, finishing second in the weight with a toss of 17.29 M (56'8 ¾”), while Cody Davis was fourth with a 15.88 M toss (52'1 ¼”). Davis also just missed scoring in the shot put, finishing ninth with a 13.99 M effort (45'10 ¾”) that put him just .03 out of the points.

The long jump found Nate Gant and Terrance Green notching points, as Gant jumped 6.74 M (22' 1 ½”) on his second-to-last jump of the day to earn a seventh-place effort. The jump moved him past Green, who wound up eighth with a 6.66 M (21' 10 ¼”) effort. Other jumping events were kind to the Keydets as well, as Dennis James cleared 2.01 M and earned a second-place finish and wrap up the VMI competitors who tallied points.

Several other athletes posted personal bests Friday, two of which came in the 1,000-meter run. Logan O'Day clocked in at 2:36.45 to finish 13th overall, while Jason Thorpe was ninth in a time of 2:34.12. Matt Satterwhite was also impressive, finishing 10th in the mile with a personal best time of 4:20.77, two places ahead of teammate Ermin Mujezinovic (4:22.43).

VMI track and field will return to action Saturday, Feb. 6, as they host the VMI Winter Relays at Cormack Field House.
