St. Chris Meet #6: Nikki Nunn US #2 19-4.50 LJ, Snyder 4:20 1600, 6 girls state qualify 1600

 

Manchester's Nikki Nunn improved upon her US #2 mark in the long jump with an indoor best leap of 19'4.50" at the St. Christopher's Mini Invite #6. Nunn had already held the state's best mark at 19'2" from earlier in the season at CNU and added a another jump over 19 feet on Saturday with a third attempt at 19'1".

 

 

The girls' 1600 meter run was a hot race with 6 girls running under the Group AAA state meet qualifying standard of 5:15 led by the Deep Run duo of Madalyn Nuckols (5:05.21) and Courtney Dobbs (5:06.36). Dobbs switched the order with teammate Nuckols later in the 1000 meter run with a 3:03.95 victory.

 

Amy WItt of Midlothian had opened up a considerable lead on Lee-Davis freshmen Bonny Turnage in the middle portions of the 3200 meter run, but Turnage rallied back to overtake Witt in the final lap for an automatic state qualifying time of 11:22 to win.

 

Lee-Davis junior Montasia Golden had an active meet competing in three individual running events and two jumping events garnering two wins in the 300 meter dash (42.44) and triple jump (36'1.25") and three runner-up finishes in 55 meter dash (7.44), 500 meter dash (1:19.17), and long jump (18'2.75").

 

The Midlothian girls are known for their distance runners by under the direction of their young sprint coach and former Manchester sprint star Kelly Keener, their sprinters are now contributing to make the Lady Trojans a more well rounded track squad. Midlothian's Kendall Sims pulled off a surprise win in the 55 meter dash against Golden of Lee-Davis in a 7.42 clocking, while also running opening leg for Midlothian's first sub 1:50 4x200 meter relay in a 1:49.99 victory.

 

 

The Central Region's top two middle distance runners were showcased at St. Christopher's on Saturday competing in separate races with junior Cody Snyder of Lee-Davis in the 1000 and junior Brayden Burleigh of Midlothian. Without the other to press each other, Snyder and Burleigh set hard early paces on their one and finished strong for solid times of 4:20 in the 1600 for Snyder and 2:34 in the 1000 for Burleigh. Snyder has been invited and will be competing at the New Balance Collegiate Games invitational high school 1000 meter race in two weeks.

 

Hiter Harris of St. Christopher's dominated the short sprints on his home track with a 6.66 clocking in the 55 meter dash and 36.35 300 meter dash performance.

 

Manchester's Devron Harris had to spirited battle with one of his top challengers in the Central Region in the hurdles from Deep Run's Brad Carnahan and came out as the winner at 7.78.
