Throwers Headline VMI's Efforts at Winter Relays

LEXINGTON, Va. – Led by personal bests from Aquisi Harris and Cody Davis, the VMI track and field teams hosted the 2010 VMI Winter Relays Saturday afternoon at Cormack Field House on VMI Post. Due to the winter weather blanketing the east coast, the meet consisted of VMI and the Keydets' crosstown neighbor, Washington & Lee.

Harris won the women's weight throw with a heave of 15.04 M (49'4”), while Davis was second in the men's version of that discipline. The junior out of Georgia trailed only his teammate, defending conference champion Chad Lawson, thanks to Davis' 16.56 M toss (54'4”). Davis also won the shot with a personal best effort (15.42 M/50'7 ¼”), prevailing by more than two meters over teammate James Handler.

“First off, we'd like to thank W&L for coming over and being a part of this meet,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “It was unfortunate that the other teams registered could not attend, but it was unavoidable and we certainly look forward to dealing with those schools in the future. In terms of our performances today, I was particularly pleased with our throwers, as Cody and Aquisi each recorded personal bests.”

The Keydets swept the podium finishes in the women's pole vault, as Kate Collins won the event by clearing 3.30 M (10'9 ¾”). Carrie Wortham was third, but the notable result came at the runner-up position, as Jennifer Sing finished second with a 3.15 M (10'4”) effort. That was a personal best clearance by well over a foot.

One of the most exciting events of the day was the women's mile, won by VMI's Lindsey Carty. Carty clocked in at 5:37.06, and nipped W&L's Kat Telfeyan at the line by .05 seconds. The Keydet freshman then was third in the 800, a race won by teammate Leah Schubel.

In addition, junior college transfer Dean Gonsalves made his VMI debut with a win in the 800-meters, as well as the closing leg of a Keydet win in the 4X400-meter relay.

VMI track and field will return to action next weekend, as the teams split into two groups. One set of athletes will journey to Akron, Ohio, for a two-day meet hosted by Akron University. That will begin Friday, as will the other planned VMI competition, the Liberty Quad hosted by Liberty University in Lynchburg.
