What a way to end a state championships. It is always epic when the state meet team title comes down to the wire and the final section of the Class 6 boys 4x400m relay.
Entering the 4x400m Relay, West Springfield trailed South Lakes by 3.5 points. That meant they need at least four points to edge them out with no one else close enough to catch either. In the race itself it was a back and forth between the two a few other teams but ultimately it was West Springfield taking the top spot with South Lakes finishing a close third. Literally the state meet was decided by under a second.
It was a total team effort by the Spartans with 8 different individual scorers, two victorious relay teams, and one relay team finishing in 7th. They could not have done it without every single one of those points.
On the other side of this equation was South Lakes who finished a close second. They too deserve congratulations as they had six different individual scorers and all three of their relays scored as well. Multiple of their guys also had PR's at the state meet showing they performed at their best when it mattered the most.
No matter which team you were cheering for though, it is always a great thing for our sport when it comes down to the wire with the 4x4.
