Kitur's Win Leads Track and Field at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Felix Kitur won the 800-meters Saturday, as he paced VMI track and field's efforts at the Virginia Tech Challenge, hosted by the Hokies at Rector Field House in Blacksburg.

Kitur's time of 1:49.55 was nearly a second faster than the field, as he won on the same track where he set his first VMI record, the indoor 800-meters, as a freshman in 2008. The time is a season-best by nearly 1.5 seconds, and would rank as the 23rd-fastest time in the country this year, coming into this weekend's action. It is the best time in the Big South this season by nearly five seconds, and finally, is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. That makes Kitur the first Keydet to provisionally qualify for that meet so far this season.

Kitur was joined in the 800-meters by Jason Thorpe and Marshall Dalessandro. Thorpe came home 23rd, thanks to a time of 1:57.98, while Dalessandro was 35th in the finishing order.

Also competing for VMI was Chandale Williams, who posted a 57.81 time in the 400-meters. The effort was good enough for 12th place, as the senior finished second in her heat.

Rounding out the Keydet competitors were three men in the mile, including freshman Ian McGinn, who won his heat in that event. McGinn's time of 4:24.47 was good for 18th overall, while just ahead of Chris Wunsch, who came home in 21st (4:27.91). Matt Sagar also returned to the track, as he finished 26th (4:34.41).

VMI track and field will return to action Saturday, Feb. 27, as the Keydets open competition at the 2010 Big South Indoor Championships. Action is set to begin at 10 a.m. at Clemson University's indoor facility in Clemson, S.C.
