Titcombe Leads VMI to Third-Place Finish at BSC Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. – A day after winning the long jump, Ademola Titcombe had an additional pair of all-conference finishes, leading the VMI track and field team to a third place finish at the 2010 Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Titcombe took second place in his trademark event, the triple jump, as he leapt 14.37 meters (47'1 ¾”). His other six points came from the 60-meter dash, where he finished third, nipping the fourth place finisher by just .002 seconds as he crossed the stripe in 7.01.

His 24 points during the meet helped VMI finish third in the meet's scoring, as the Keydets piled up 85 points over the two days. That put them five points ahead of High Point, who finished fourth, and fifth-place Radford was seven points back of VMI's pace. Winthrop (54 points), Gardner-Webb (36) and UNC Asheville (14) rounded out the standings, while Liberty won the overall title with 192 points, 70 ahead of Charleston Southern.

“Dada was great this weekend, and in fact, our entire team did an outstanding job across the board,” offered VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “Charleston Southern just executed flawlessly, and there wasn't much we could have done to beat them. I'm proud of our team and our effort, and I am also happy for Coach Langford (Tim of Charleston Southern) and his team, as they did a great job.”

VMI had multiple point scorers in several events Sunday, including the mile. Ermin Mujezinovic was fifth in that race, as he crossed the line with a time of 4:20.26, just over a second ahead of seventh-place Matt Satterwhite (4:21.51). Satterwhite was the only Keydet, with the exception of Titcombe, to score in three individual events, as the senior added a sixth-place effort in the 5,000-meters (15:25.39) to go along with his outings in the mile and Saturday's 3,000-meters. Satterwhite's day was capped when he was named to the Big South All-Academic Team following the meet.

Meanwhile, Ian McGinn earned his first career conference point, notching an eighth-place finish alongside Satterwhite in the 5,000-meters (15:32.33), while Terrance Green was eighth in the triple jump to earn a point (13.30 meters/43'7 ¾”).

James Alexander and Felix Kitur scored in a pair of events Sunday as well, as they joined Kyle Fuller and Dean Gonsalves in competing on the 4X400-meter relay squad that came home fourth, finishing in a time of 3:23.84. Individually, Alexander was fifth in a crowded 200-meter field, thanks to his time of 22.36, and Kitur was upset in the 800-meters and finished third by crossing the stripe in 1:53.76.

The Keydets also had two athletes notch points in the heptathlon, led by Michael Munson's fourth-place finish. The junior's 4,512 points were a personal best, beating his previous top mark by more than 200 markers. Antonio Wood placed eighth in the event, notching 4,182 points.

Finally, Cody Davis continued his strong indoor season, and will move into next weekend's IC4A's with momentum after a fourth-place finish in today's shot put. His throw of 15.17 meters (49'9 ¼”) earned him the finish.

VMI track and field will return to action Saturday, as qualified Keydets take part in the IC4A/ECAC Championships. The meet will be held in Boston, Mass.
