Kitur Paces Keydets During Day One of IC4A/ECAC Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – Felix Kitur won his heat of the 800-meters to lead the VMI track and field teams on day one of competition at the IC4A/ECAC Championships in Boston, Mass.

Kitur's time of 1:51.59 gave him the heat win by nearly a second, and also placed him in the #4 qualifying position for Sunday's event final. Kitur will be looking to improve on his NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 800-meters, which he posted two weeks ago at Virginia Tech (1:49.55).

Also on Saturday, the distance medley relay team posted the fifth-fastest time in school history in its event, as the squad put up a 10:05.27 clocking. That ranked the Keydets 15th, ahead of such schools as Boston College and Army. The runners were Ian McGinn (3:06, 1,200-meters), Kyle Fuller (49.0, 400-meters), Dean Gonsalves (1:53, 800-meters) and Matt Satterwhite (4:14, 1,600-meters).

Several other Keydets competed as well, including Chad Lawson, who finished 16th in the weight throw (16.64 meters/54'7 ¼”). James Alexander ran a 22.23 in the 200-meters, which did not qualify for him for the race's final round, while across town at the ECAC meet, Chandale Williams completed her 400-meter race in 57.55 seconds and finished 18th.

“On the whole, we looked a little flat after last week's Big South Championships, but I was still pleased with our efforts as a whole,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “Felix ran a smart race to advance, and the DMR team turned in a quality performance. Chandale also did a good job, as she was able to hang in there and post a solid time after being bounced around a bit early in her race.”

The VMI track and field teams will return to action Sunday, as day two of the IC4A and ECAC Championships takes place in Boston. The IC4A Championships will open at 9:30 a.m., with the first Keydets starting competition two hours later. The ECAC's will start at 11 a.m. with the pole vault, which will include VMI's own Kate Collins.
