Kitur Wins IC4A Title on Final Day of Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – Felix Kitur became the 2010 IC4A 800-meter champion Sunday, as he captured the event's title on the final day of the 2010 IC4A/ECAC Championships in Boston, Mass.

Kitur crossed the line in a time of 1:50.38, three-tenths ahead of Nick Wade from Cornell University. Sunday's race had shaped up to be an exciting battle between Kitur, who entered ranked 28th in the country, and Donte Holmes of Delaware State, who had been ranked 19th. Holmes may have suffered an injury, however, as it took him nearly three minutes to complete the distance. Kitur would go on to capture the first IC4A title of his career, and the first such championship for the Keydets since the 2008 outdoor meet, when the 4X800-meter relay team won its event.

Several other Keydets competed Sunday, including Ademola Titcombe, who finished 14th in the triple jump (13.95 M/45'9 ¼”). The sophomore was joined in the field events by Dennis James, who was unable to post a height in the high jump, and Cody Davis, who placed 21st in the shot put (14.89 M/48'10 ¼”).

Across town at the ECAC meet, the opening height for the pole vault was set at 3.55 meters, which would have been a VMI record. Unfortunately, Kate Collins was unable to clear the bar and accordingly, did not post a height during the competition.

Kitur now must wait to determine if he makes the field for the NCAA Indoor Championships, as he is the only Keydet to post an NCAA qualifying mark this season. Those championships will begin Thursday, March 11 in Fayetteville, Ark. Meanwhile, the remainder of the VMI track and field teams will be back in action March 26 and 27, as the Keydets host the second Military Track and Field Championships at Foster Stadium.
