Live Blog - 2010 Military Track and Field Championships - Day Two

Welcome to day two of this year's Military Track and Field Championships! As always, please feel free to email saloisbj@vmi.edu with any questions or comments, and thank you for reading!

6:00 - I'm going to end the blog here, since only two events remain. When I get the results, I will quickly pop them on to the results page (linked above), and will eventually put them on here as well. I do apologize to the individual who asked about pole vault results, which I still haven't seen.

A full recap of the VMI side of the meet will be available on VMIKeydets.com later tonight...As always, thank you for following along! These blogs are made enjoyable by your interactions and questions, and I always appreciate hearing from you, the track and field fan. Once again, thank you and good night from the Military Track and Field Championships.

5:57 - Air Force wins the women's 4X4 in a new meet record...We should just be down to the men's discus and the men's 4X4, the first of which appears to still be going on behind me. The women's pole vault is over but has not reported.

5:26 - Men's 5K underway...Includes Justin Tyner of Air Force, who was third at the indoor national meet.

And he wins easily in 14:09, Walmsley second.

Tyner has broken away coming to the bell...

Still Tyner and Walmsley, followed by closely by two other runners as we're at three laps to go.

Tyner still leads at 2K, trailed closely by his teammate Jim Walmsley.

Tyner on pace for 14:25 time, maintains lead through 1,200...

Tyner with the lead after 800, but still has several other runners right on his heels.

5:22 - Neubauer wins the women's discus for Air Force, and now has won all four of the throwing events. Talk about domination...My goodness.

5:00 - Underway in the women's 5K...and VMI's Hannah Granger gets a big cushion after one lap. I'm going to update the area under this with 5K notes, rather than make a bunch of individual posts. It'll be newest to oldest...

Doesn't quite get there...Granger wins by leading from start to finish in 17:29, Hebda is second and Erica Ziel of Navy was third.

Granger needs a 1:16 final lap to make ECAC's.

With a lap and a half to go, Granger is on cruise control...The time will be the only question.

And it remains seven seconds with three to go...This may be a VMI record. Granger holds that mark with a 17:49 from 2008...The record for this size of military academy is 17:21, which may be a bit much.

The lead is seven seconds with four to go...

Hebda is digging and is gaining gradually...Granger is very smooth, even checking her watch midway down the backstretch.

Halfway through, Granger's time is 8:40...Lead may be shrinking slightly but is still very substantial.

6:56 through 2K for Granger...Mollie Hebda of Navy pulls away slightly for second, but the lead remains stable.

No change up front...If the lead was 15 meters before, it's 13 now. No appreciable movement. A pack of four runners behind Granger, as she goes through the first mile in 5:30.

Granger splits 3:25 after 1K.

Granger's lead continues to be about 15 meters after just two full laps.

4:51 - Men's high jump has concluded...Michael Hutchins wins with a meet record of 2.05 M.

4:46 - Four running events remaining, with the women's 5K next on the slate. We still have a bunch of field events going, including the discus, women's pole vault and men's high jump.

4:43 - James Alexander loses the 200 to Alfred McDaniel by just .06 seconds...Certainly the closest on-track finish today. McDaniel has now won the 100, 200 and long jump.

4:37 - Arabia Littlejohn won the 200 in 26.17, giving her the 200/400 double at this meet. Air Force leads the women's standings by 16 over Navy, followed by Army, The Citadel, VMI (VMI trails Citadel by one point) and the Coast Guard.

4:33 - Not much has changed since I last posted...We just ran the women's 200, which I'll have to get you the results of in a moment. As you can see, a fresh results file has been linked to below.

4:11 - Justin Manchester of Air Force wins the hurdles in 54.77.

4:08 - Second section of men's 400 hurdles on track...Women's long jump now heading to the final round.

3:52 - Getting ready for the men's 400 hurdles now...Will not be posting for a few minutes as I try to work on a lacrosse story.

3:45 - Kitur officially declared the winner of the 800 in 1:51.81...Women's 400 hurdles now underway, with the women's pole vault and men's high jumps also taking place in front of me. Several new pictures have been put on the meet album, so make sure to check those out.

3:33 - Kitur underway, running out of lane 4...Out to the early lead. Has everybody by a stride coming to the bell...new second-place runner and he is gaining. Kitur turns it on on the back stretch and holds him off in a dash to the finish line...That long stride of Kitur's is really a marvel, he just eats up so much ground. Lawson and Davis go 6th and 7th in the hammer, with the win going to Navy's Marc Van Orden. Despite that, Army still holds the men's lead.

3:30 - Air Force continues to lead the women's competition, with VMI running 5th. Getting ready for Felix Kitur's section of the 800, which should be coming up in a few moments.

3:26 - That would be Daphane Wright winning that event. Good job by the PA announcer to make the quick battery change...He (Paul Carmany, Liberty's track SID) has done a great job all day.

3:23 - Robert Brown wins the paralympic 100-meter dash, while Scott Winkler takes that division's discus throw. The women's paralympic discus throw is won by...the PA announcer's mic just went out. Going to have to get back to y'all on that one.

3:16 - Romanko wins in 2:10.36, a new meet record. It looked like a race for awhile, but Romanko powered through the last turn with a huge kick and gapped the field impressively. Long jump results just in...Titcombe finishes fifth, with the event won by McDaniel of Army (7.09 M).

3:12 - Results file now loaded below. Erin Newman of Navy wins section 1 of the 800-meters, but overwhelming favorite Ally Romanko of Air Force is in section 2. So is Lindsey Carty of VMI, who was sixth in the 1,500 earlier.

3:08 - James Alexander's 11.03 is second in the 100-meters to Alfred McDaniel's winning effort. Results file will be posted in a moment.

3:05 - Men's pole vault won by All-American Nick Frawley with a clearance of 5.20 meters, and that's 17 feet, 3/4 inches. We have a new results file, new pictures, and all kinds of things happening...Give me a few minutes to get everything put up.

2:40 - No final announcement on the men's 400 yet, so it's time for another trip down to the track. I'll be back shortly with more postings.

2:32 - Williams 2nd with her 58.25, Arabia Littlejohn of Navy wins in 57.87.

2:27 - Chandale Williams wins her heat of the 400, full results in a moment.

2:20 - Domonick Sylve of Army wins the men's 110-hurdles...Now a brief pause while we get ready for the 400-meter dash.

2:06 - Army goes 1-4 in the women's 100-meter hurdles, led by a 14.83 from Tanya Stallard. That cuts Air Force's lead to 11 points over the Black Knights.

1:59 - The results file (which will be attached in a moment) does not have the latest field event results, which is a timing oversight. I will correct that when I go down again, but in the meantime, I've consolidated what I have into a Word file.

1:54 - All-American (from the indoor 5K) Justin Tyner wins the men's 1,500 in a meet record 3:47.32 time, with Dean Gonsalves of VMI finishing seventh. I have an updated results file and should have that posted in a few moments.

1:29 - All right, heading back down to the track for a little bit...Again, anything extremely time relevant that goes on while I'm down there I'll put on Twitter. The women's 1,500 just started.

1:21 - Sara Neubauer is dominating this meet...She wins the hammer throw, making it three-for-three in throwing events. Her 53.43 M toss is a new meet record.

1:18 - Men's 4X1 now underway...Very close as usual. Army wins in 42.32, Air Force second with 42.36, Citadel third in 42.42 and VMI 42.98. Looked like the Keydets were in a battle for third, but the last exchange was a little off.

1:11 - Army wins the women's 4X1 with a 48.96 time, marking the second time they have won this event. Navy was second in 49.03.

1:06 - Women's 4X1 relay is the next event on track, scheduled for a 1:10 start.

1:01 - Men's javelin results show Connor Van Fossen of Air Force setting a new meet record and winning with a 61.34 M toss, while Christopher Ricks of Navy had a 58.49 effort. Men's pole vault appears to be well underway across the track...Now have Satterwhite and McGinn's positions confirmed from the steeple...Satterwhite had a 9:28.40 and finished fifth (that time would have put him third at last year's Big South meet), while McGinn's 9:40.60 was good for eighth.

12:58 - Nordahl wins in 9:18.35, David Black of Army second in 9:23.74 and Foote of Navy third at 9:25.05. Appeared Satterwhite and McGinn were both in the top seven for VMI.

12:55 p.m. - Nordahl pulls out to a 10-12 meter lead with two to go...Impressive breakaway speed.

12:53 p.m. - No one can break away in the steeple...Nordahl of Air Force and Chitwood of Army lead a pack of 10 down the backstretch...Now Nordahl has a little distance.

12:50 p.m. - About a lap and a half gone by in the men's steeple, and the pack is still tightly bunched.

12:44 p.m. - Men's 3K steeple getting ready on the far side of the track...The honorary starter is Donnie Cowart '09, the All-American from last year who ran an 8:44 in this race at the national meet. He's currently training to try to make it back to the USATF Championships, and in fact, ran a 9:01 last night at Washington & Lee's meet across town.

12:41 p.m. - Bremser of Air Force wins in a meet record time of 11:26.92, Katie Taylor of Navy (11:33.62) second and Moye (11:42.64) third...Watching the race, Bremser seemed to pace herself comfortably early on before starting a kick with four laps to go. Moye struggled with the water jumps as well, which did not help.

12:37 p.m. - And now Moye to third and fading...Good distance back to fourth though, she should be safe.

12:36 p.m. - Three laps to go and Moye's lead is shrinking slightly...Down to about five meters, but she has never seriously been threatened throughout.

12:34 p.m. - As we complete the fourth lap, it's Moye by about 10 meters with a group of runners packed tightly for second.

12:31 p.m. - Jenna Moye out to the comfortable early lead after about 2.5 laps...Bethany Rahall of Navy is second.

12:26 p.m. - Sorry for the long length of time between posts, but I wanted to try to get some additional field results besides the women's jav. Unfortunately, none were completed before I had to come back up top...I'll get the file with those results input here in just a few moments. Women's 3K steeple is about to start, and I hope to provide some in progress updates. Jenna Moye of VMI is the heavy favorite, at least according to the pre-race performance list.

10:23 a.m. - Hackemeyer's 32.10 gets her sixth place...Feole finishes third with the 38.54 throw. Sara Neubauer of Air Force was the one who launched the 41.44 effort, and she wins her second event of the meet, following the shot put yesterday.

Going to go down trackside for a bit and try to get the feel of things down there...Will post any relevant news on Twitter for the next little while, but I'll be sure to be back up here around 12:30 for the start of the running events.

10:15 a.m. - Still waiting on the women's javelin results...Will certainly post them when they are announced.

10:00 a.m. - Meanwhile, what appears to be (keep in mind, I'm situated high above Foster Stadium) an Air Force competitor just threw a 41.44 M toss, far and away the best so far. Could be defending meet champ Katie Weber. Michelle Feole closed with a 36.95, and we should be just about done with the women's javelin.

9:56 a.m. - Hackemeyer's final throw in the finals a 30.88...She'll be disappointed with that.

9:53 a.m. - As a reminder, there is no charge to get into the meet today...We're getting slight increases in the temp even now, so the weather is outstanding. Great day to bundle up and come on out.

9:51 a.m. - Somebody (didn't see who, was talking to our photographer) just snapped a 40.31 M toss, which is the first I've seen over 40 today. Feole follows with a 38.54, which is going to put her pretty high up in the standings.

9:48 a.m. - Hackemeyer's second throw in finals a 32.10 M.

9:42 a.m. - Hard to tell what's going on in the finals of the javelin...Some marks that appeared to come on clean throws weren't posted on the performance board, but others have been. I can tell you that Feole seems to be having trouble getting her javelin to stick into the ground (thus making the throw irrelevant).

9:31 a.m. - Regardless of where their marks placed them, both Hackemeyer and Feole appear to have made the finals. Warm-ups are currently underway. The women's hammer warm-ups should be starting as well, but those are on the upper field, and thus, impossible to blog about.

9:25 a.m. - Michelle Feole's second throw is a 38.46 M, which I think is the best mark thus far...Hard to follow the jav though.

9:15 a.m. - Hope Hackemeyer's first throw was a 31.18 M mark, which I think is the fourth-best so far...Women's hammer competitors being introduced. Weather continues to improve.

9:11 a.m. - Rebecca Kratz of Army is your leader after one flight of the women's javelin (although her best mark has been surpassed early in flight two)...Weather starting to warm up, but we did have a frost delay because it made the runway slick.

8:08 a.m. - We're here at Foster Stadium on a COLD March morning...Great weather though. It may be cold, but it's clear and sunny. The javelin throwers are currently warming up, and the women's version of that event should get underway shortly. The meet preview, including a schedule, is linked above...Fans should note that the men's pole vault is now at noon today.
