Granger's School Record Leads Keydet Women at Military Championships

LEXINGTON, Va. – Led by Hannah Granger's school record performance in the 5,000-meters, the VMI women's track and field team finished fourth at the 2010 Military Track and Field Championships, which concluded Saturday at Foster Stadium in Lexington.

Granger's 17:29.28 clocking gave her the 5K victory, and was some 20 seconds better than the previous school record, which Granger herself set in 2008. The junior held a commanding lead from the opening lap and went on to win by just under 10 seconds, setting a new meet record in the process.

Those 10 points helped VMI earn its fourth-place finish, as the Keydets posted 64 points on the day. Air Force won the meet, led by senior Sara Neubauer winning all four throwing disciplines and leading the Falcons to 237 total points. Navy finished second with 193 points, while Army had 163 markers. The Citadel came home fifth, as the Bulldogs had 49 points, and Coast Guard finished sixth with its 11 points.

“I was proud to be the coach of this team this weekend,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “Both teams did a great job of competing for the two full days, and their fourth-place finishes are something to be proud of because all the teams involved in this meet are strong and very well-coached.”

One of VMI's team captains, Chandale Williams, was a double scorer Saturday as well. She notched a second place finish in her specialty, the 400-meters, by clocking in at 58.25 seconds. That was the fifth-fastest time in the Big South this season, and she followed it up with a 26.44 effort in the 200 to come home third in that event.

The Keydets notched nine points in the pole vault, led by Big South Indoor Champion Kate Collins finishing fifth. Both Collins and Jennifer Sing cleared 3.20 meters (10'6”), but Sing finished sixth due to the numbers of misses she incurred. Still, the sophomore's clearance was an outdoor PR by nearly two-and-a-half feet. A pair of VMI athletes also notched points in the day-opening javelin, led by school record holder Michelle Feole. The senior hurled the implement 38.54 M (126'5”) to earn a third-place finish, while Hope Hackemeyer was the sixth-best entrant on this day, posting a distance of 32.10 M (105'4”).

In addition, four events saw single Keydets increase the team's point total. Aquisi Harris notched a single marker in the hammer throw, thanks to a ninth-place finish (40.39 M, 132'6”). Jenna Moye was third in her first collegiate steeplechase with an 11:42.64 time, which was the second-best time in the Big South this young indoor season, and Lindsey Carty was sixth in the 1,500-meters (4:59.29). Finally, Zipporah McCann was fifth in the long jump as she leapt 5.34 M (17'6 ¼”) to notch the second-best long jump of her career.

“I want to take this opportunity to recognize the work of my staff,” said Coach Webb. “Without the work done by Paul Spangler, Garrett Brickner and Zack Scott, as well as our volunteers, Mike Decker and former coach Mike Bozeman, this meet would not have been possible. I also want to thank the many individuals that contributed to the weekend, both logistically and simply through their participation. Finally, I would like to say thank you to General Peay and Lt. Col Gadson for attending our dinner Friday night, as their speeches were welcome and appreciated by all.”

VMI track and field will return to action Friday, as the Keydets travel to Lynchburg to take part in the Liberty Collegiate Invitational. The first day of the two-day event is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
