Run It Back: Nitzsche and Spotswood Repeat As State Champs

SALEM, Va. - Samantha Nitzsche (William Monroe) and Spotswood both successfully defended their state titles this weekend by winning the VHSL Class 3 State crown.

If there was one race where things looked solid it was the Class 3 girls race. In this race you had Nitzsche and Allegheny's Kiera Lowman who had alternated XC state titles for the last two years and if you included Middle School State titles then they have both gone either first or second the past four years.

That is exactly how the race played out at Green Hill Park. Those two opened up an early lead and never looked back. They were dead even through 1K, 2K, and 3K before Nitzsche got a slight lead over Lowman. That lead of nine seconds would grow to 17 second at the finish with the two of them going 17:28 to 17:45.

Team wise it was Spotswood winning yet again making this three years in a row on the podium and their second straight title. Finishing just behind them by one point was Christiansburg. This could be one of the closest team title battles of the state meet season with the top three teams being separated by just four points.
