At the mile+ point, JMU's Shannon Saunders has emerged as the early leader followed closely by W&M's Julia Cathcart. Running 3rd at the mile+ is W&M's Meghan Bishop. A small pack is led by Delaware's Coleen O'Brien on the right and JMU's Nellie Anderson on the left.
And the rest at the mile+ point. Another JMU runner and two VCU runners (Remy Merriam in the center) flash by the mile+ point. With a comforable lead Shannon Saunders heads up the final hill before turning in the finish stretch with a championship time of 21:00.40.
In second with 1/2 mile to go is Delaware's O'Brien. W&M's Jackie Kosakowski has moved up to 3rd as she begins the final 1/2 mile and will catch the Delaware runner for a runner up finish of 21:24.50. In 4th and 5th with 1/2 mile to go are Julia Cathcart and Meghan Bishop, but JMU's Anderson would catch them both before the finish.
Here's JMU's Anderson who closes strong on the last 1/2 mile to finish 4th. The mens race is underway with W&M's Jeff Hedley and Ian Fitzgerald in the front. At the 1 1/2 mile point, it's Tribe 4-pack in front, led by Hedley with Matt Keally and Landry running side by side in 2nd.
In 4th is W&M's Comstock with JMU's Ted Herbert and C.W. Moran flanking the next position, and VCU's Steven Walters behind Moran. At the halfway mark, the Tribe 4-pack has opened a gap with Hedley still leading the way. Herbert and Moran still running 5th and 6th.
Steven Walters at the midpoint. JMU's James Printz and VCU's Riad Ouled at the 2 1/2 milepoint. With 1/2 mile to go, it's now W&M's Matt Keally with the lead as Keally goes on to post a winning time of 25:15.60 on the hilly New Market course.
In second is Christo Landry who finishes with a time of 25:20.90. 3rd and 4th are Fitzgerald and Hedley. Pat Comstock is next, passing Herbert and Moran to take fourth overall as Fitzgerald collapsed 400 meters before the finish.
