Kitur Posts 10th-Fastest 800-Meter Time in East Region

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Felix Kitur dominated and won the 800-meters with a 1:49.69 clocking Saturday at the Lou Onesty Invitational, hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

Kitur's time was the 10th-fastest effort in the East Region this year, entering the weekend's action. It was also the 22nd-best time nationally, and was good enough for the win by some four seconds in meet record time. Finally, it is the top time in the Big South this season.

Kitur was not the only high Keydet finisher in the 800-meters, as Dean Gonsalves also finished in the top five. The junior college transfer placed fifth with a 1:54.52 time, and now ranks eighth on the Big South performance list in 2010.

Another event that was kind to VMI Saturday was the men's long jump, as three Keydets placed in the top 10 of that event. Ademola Titcombe was fifth, leaping 6.79 meters (22'3 ½”), while Terrance Green placed ninth with a 6.51 meter effort (21'4 ¼”). Nate Gant wrapped up the trio's efforts with a 10th-place finish, as he posted a 6.39 meter leap (20'11 ¾”).

Cody Davis also earned a top-five finish, as the junior threw the shot 14.92 meters (48'11 ½”) to record a third-place finish. James Handler joined Davis in the top-10, as Handler hurled the implement 13.43 meters (44'0 ¾”) to finish seventh.

Two other Keydets recorded top-five finishes on the men's side, as James Alexander and Dennis James did so. Alexander sprinted to a fourth-place result in the 200-meters, on the strength of a 21.84 effort, while James tied for fifth in the high jump by clearing 1.95 meters (6'4 ¾”).

Wrapping up the men's results, Tyler Brown was 10th in the javelin (48.44 meters/158'11”) and Chad Lawson placed 11th in the discus (40.94 meters/133'0”). Finally, Chris Wunsch recorded a 14th-place result in the 3,000-meters (9:04.92).

On the women's side, Kate Collins followed her VMI record performance last week with a third-place finish Saturday. The 3.35 meter (10'11 ¾”) clearance was just short of Collins' 3.40 meter effort last week. Carrie Wortham also recorded a solid leap in the pole vault, as she cleared 3.05 meters (10'0”) and placed sixth.

Chandale Williams, who also posted a school record last week, followed up with a pair of top-10 finishes Saturday afternoon. A 57.95 time gave the senior an eighth-place finish in the 400-meters, while a 26.19 clocking was good enough for 10th in the 200-meters. Finally, Zipporah McCann was 12th in the long jump with a 5.11 meter leap (16'9 ¼”).

VMI track and field will return to action Thursday, as the Keydets open competition at the 2010 Big South Outdoor Championships. The first day of competition on the campus of Charleston Southern University is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., and VMIKeydets.com will be on hand with a live blog and related coverage.
