Strong Team Effort Leads VMI at BSC Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Several personal best efforts and point scoring performances helped the VMI men's track and field team to a sixth-place standing after one day of the 2010 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Charleston Southern University in Charleston, S.C.

The Keydets currently hold sixth place with their nine total points, and trail host Charleston Southern by three markers. Radford sits fourth with 19 points, while Coastal Carolina (22), High Point (31) and Liberty (45) round out the top of the standings. Sitting seventh is Winthrop with eight points, while Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville are tied with five points apiece.

Antonio Wood was one of the first day standouts for VMI, clearing a personal best of 1.96 meters (6'5”) to win the decathlon high jump by almost five inches (.12 meters). Wood also finished second in the multi event's 100-meter dash (11.20), and fourth in the long jump (6.13 meters, 20'1 ½”). All told, the freshman currently sits third in the decathlon with 3,447 points, and just 43 markers out of the lead. His teammate, Michael Munson, sits fourth overall with 3,318 points. Munson's day was highlighted by a 6.35 meter (20'10”) long jump, which was good for second place and 664 points.

The open long jump was kind to VMI as well, as the Keydets notched seven of their nine points in that event. Officially, Terrance Green was recorded in fifth with a jump of 6.99 meters (22'11 ¼”) and Ademola Titcombe leapt 6.96 M (22'10”) to place sixth.

The other Keydet points of the first day came in the hammer throw, where team co-captain Chad Lawson launched a 50.66 meter (166'2”) throw to earn a seventh-place finish. His teammate, Cody Davis, was just .53 meters behind him in ninth (50.13 M/164'6”).

Sophomore Tyler Brown, competing in just his fourth outdoor meet since joining the team, posted his second-highest javelin mark with the Keydets (49.26 M/161'7”) and finished 11th. Fellow thrower Justin McCarthy was 12th with a 45.75 meter effort (150'1”).

The Keydets continue competition tomorrow at the Big South Outdoor Championships, opening up the meet at 11 a.m. VMI's best event, the 3,000-meter steeplechase, is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
