Carty Notches Opening Points for Keydet Women at BSC Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Lindsey Carty opened the scoring for the VMI women's track and field team by finishing eighth in the 10,000-meters and Zipporah McCann had a strong first day in the heptathlon, as the Keydets opened competition at day one of the 2010 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Charleston Southern University in Charleston, S.C.

Freshman Carty finished eighth in the day's final event, and recorded a 39:16.76 time in her first collegiate 10K, earning VMI's first points of the meet in the process. The Keydets currently stand in ninth place overall, four points behind UNC Asheville, who earned five points in the day's first scored event, the javelin throw. High Point is seventh (10 points), beginning a cluster of teams who are ranked third through seventh. Those places are separated by just six points, and are led by host Charleston Southern (16 points). Radford has 15 markers to rank fourth, while Winthrop has fifth place thanks to its 13 points. Gardner-Webb is sixth with 12 points, followed by HPU, UNCA and VMI.

McCann got off to a strong start in heptathlon's 110-meter hurdles, posting a 15.44 clocking to beat her previous best by more than a second. She then cleared a solid 1.50 meters (4'11”) in the high jump, before posting another personal best, this time in the shot put (8.94 M/29'4”). The junior than wrapped up her day with a 27.69 time in the 200-meters, and sits sixth place overall after day one, 129 points out of fifth.

McCann also finished 15th in the open long jump, while Aquisi Harris and Kelsey McCusker were 12th and 13th in the hammer throw. Finally, Hope Hackemeyer led the Keydet quartet in the javelin throw, finishing ninth with a toss of 36.12 meters (118'6”) and Kate Lamneck posted a three-meter PR to finish 13th.

VMI track and field will return to action Friday, as the Keydets continue competition at this year's Big South Championships. The meet is set to resume at 11 a.m.
