CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Keydets notched six points in the pole vault and Chandale Williams set a school record in the 400-meter preliminaries to boost the VMI women's track and field team on day two of the 2010 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Charleston Southern University in Charleston, S.C.
Kate Collins was the top scorer for VMI, setting a new school record in the pole vault by clearing 3.41 meters (11'2 ¼”) to finish fourth. Collins finished in a tie with the third-place competitor, but due to misses earlier in the competition, finished just shy of an all-conference honor. In an interesting twist, Collins won the indoor Big South Championship due to the number of misses by her opponents.
Jennifer Sing also found the scoreboard in the pole vault, as she set her third personal best of the outdoor season by clearing 3.26 meters (10'8 ¼”) to finish eighth. All told, Collins' and Sing's performances accounted for six points, while Carrie Wortham's personal best 3.11 meter (10'2 ½”) effort was good for 11th.
“Our entire team did a good job today, as we have had 15 to 20 seasonal best performances over the course of the meet. Several other schools, however, have had similar outings,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “We just have to come out tomorrow ready to go, and I'm confident that will happen. I expect it to be a very tough day of competition, but we will be out there fighting for every last point we can get.”
Williams set herself up for Saturday's event finals by clocking in at 56.93 seconds in the 400-meter preliminaries, making her the #2 qualifier. The performance is the second time this year Williams has reset her own school record in the event, and both have been by just .02 seconds.
In other results for the Keydets, Zipporah McCann completed the heptathlon Friday and ended up with an eighth-place result. McCann posted personal bests in the long jump, shot put and 100-meter hurdles en route to 3,894 points, by far a personal best.
In the team standings, the Keydets currently hold eighth place with eight points, three points ahead of UNC Asheville. Liberty leads with 89.5 points, just ahead of Coastal Carolina's 84 markers. Radford sits third at 37.5 markers, while Charleston Southern (36), Gardner-Webb (33) and High Point (32) are battling for fourth. Winthrop is seventh, holding that spot with 26 points thus far.
The Keydets continue competition tomorrow at the final day Big South Outdoor Championships, opening up the meet at 10 a.m.
