Women's Indoor T&F Captures BSC Sportsmanship Award

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – VMI women's indoor track and field has captured the Big South Sportsmanship Award for the 2010 winter season, as announced by the conference Thursday.

Indoor track enjoyed its best season ever, capped by 52 points at the conference championships. That total was the highest ever for the women's program at a Big South Championships, indoors or outdoors. The squad was led by a pair of conference champions, Kate Collins and Hannah Granger. Collins won the pole vault in dramatic fashion, capturing the title thanks to having the lowest numbers of misses, while Granger was the Big South winner in the 5,000-meters and also claimed all-conference honors in the 3,000-meters.

The sportsmanship award is the third for VMI thus far this school year, as women's indoor track and field joins women's cross country and football as the recipients. The team awards are voted on by Big South student-athletes and are awarded at the end of each competitive season.  Teams cannot vote for themselves.  Each institution ranks and votes for its top three.  Teams receive three points for a first-place ranking, two points for a second-place ranking and one point for a third-place ranking.

At the conclusion of the 2009-10 athletic season, the Big South Conference's Institutional Sportsmanship Award will be announced.  An institution's sport winners count towards the Institution Sportsmanship Award and the winner is determined on a system recognizing the highest percentage of the maximum possible points each institution is capable of achieving in that year.  The institution with the highest percentage will win the award.  VMI has won the Big South's Institutional Sportsmanship Award all four years of the award's history.
