Feole Leads Sweep of Women's Javelin at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Michelle Feole broke her own school record in the javelin, leading the Keydet women's track and field team to a sweep of the top three spots in that event at Thursday's Liberty Twilight Qualifier, hosted by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

Feole, the senior out of Raleigh, N.C., uncorked a 41.27 M throw (135'5”) to win the event, and best the previous VMI record by just under a foot. The title was her third career win at the Liberty Twilight meet, as she also captured the crown in 2007 and 2008. In both of those years, she set a new VMI record as well, making 2010 the third year she had accomplished that at this very meet. Thursday's effort was also an ECAC qualifier for Feole. Meanwhile, Hope Hackemeyer was second in the event with a 35.66 M toss (117'0”), and Kaitlin Harrison was third at 35.34 meters (115'11”).

The Keydets also had strong performances in the pole vault, as Kate Collins and Jennifer Sing were both in the top eight. Both cleared 3.40 meters (11'1 ¾”), just short of the VMI record of 3.41 M, but Collins finished sixth thanks to having fewer misses. For Sing, the clearance was her third personal best of the 2010 outdoor season.

Leah Schubel returned to the track in the 1,500-meters and had a strong performance, finishing fifth in 4:59.92, while Chandale Williams was seventh in the 400, clocking in at 57.31. Finally, Aquisi Harris was fifth in the hammer with a 46.84 M toss (153'8”) and earned the same result in the discus, with a throw of 32.82 M (107'8”). Kelsey McCusker was sixth in the discus, posting a personal best of 30.19 M (99'0”).

The next event for VMI track and field is currently scheduled to be the IC4A/ECAC Championships, which will get underway on Friday, May 14 in Princeton, N.J.
