Sherando boys win 6th district title in 7 years

THE PLAINS, VA -- The Sherando boys cross country team continued their winning tradition as they won their 6th Commonwealth District title in 7 years. Sherando was led by senior Jared Prunty who won the boys race in a time of 16:17 on the Great Meadows 5K course that is also used as the state course. Rounding out a strong top 3 for Sherando was the sophomore duo of Erik Fullmer (4th, 16:40) and Ryan Foster (5th, 16:52) as the team finished with 44 points.

Other boys squads advancing to Northwest Region Meet next week are James Wood (62 pts), Stafford (76 pts), and Colonial Forge (77 pts).

Freshman Kristin Novara of James Wood beat a strong field of runners that included last year's district champion Colleen Connell of Brooke Point and North Stafford junior Kristyn Shiring (2nd, 19:30), who had been previously beating Novara by almost a minute earlier in the year. Novara made a surge at the hill at the 2 1/2 mile mark, and no runner was able to catch with her as she crossed the finish line in a time of 19:14.

The Brooke Point girls, led by Connell's third place finish (19:48), placed 4 runners in the top 10 for a total score of 41 points as they won the district team title.

Other teams making the trip with the Brooke Point girls to regionals are Culpeper (63 pts), Sherando (86 pts), and North Stafford (111 pts). The Colonial Forge girls were a disheartening 5th as they were 1 point off the last regional qualifying spoit with a score of 112 points.
