Spiders Open 2004 Indoor Track Season

Richmond women place six among Top-6 in four events

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Richmond track and field squad began its 2004-05 season at the CNU Lid Lifter Invitational Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va. The Spider women\'s squad garnered a total of six Top-6 finishes in four events including three among the Top-6 in the weight throw.

Richmond\'s three sophomore throwers excelled at the season\'s first meet garnering a total of four Top-6 finishes. Lindsey Smith took fifth in the shot put with a distance of 41-00.00. Beth Crocus led all three in the weight throw with a third-place finish and a distance of 46-11.75. Smith finished behind Crocus in fourth with a throw of 41-03.75 and Leslie Gleue tossed a distance of 38-08.25 for sixth place. In another field event, senior Ashley Bell recorded a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 17-04.00. Junior Danielle Eaton recorded the Spiders\' only Top-6 finish in the running events with a third-place time of 2:21.47 in the 800 meter.

On the men\'s side sophomore Rusty Burrell finished just outside of the Top-6 in the high jump, but recorded a better height than he did all of last season. The Lawton, Okla., native cleared 6-04.00, .75 inches higher than the Spiders\' season best during the 2003-04 season.

Richmond resumes its schedule after winter break, Jan. 8 when it travels to the North Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
