Landry Wins 5,000m to Lead Qualifiers
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Two-time defending CAA Champion William and Mary men's track and field started its 2004-05 campaign today with five runners qualifying for the IC4A indoor championships at Christopher Newport's Lid-Lifter.Freshman Christo Landry (Falls Church, VA), who ended the cross country season some three weeks ago as an All-American, started his track career with a strong performance by leading five Tribe IC4A qualifiers in the 5,000m with his winning time of 14:26.28. Senior Jeff Hedley (Virginia Beach, VA), an automatic NCAA qualifier in the outdoor 5,000m, claimed second in the race with his IC4A time of 14:32.05, just ahead of freshman Ian Fitzgerald (Glenshaw, PA) who timed a 14:34.50 for third. Sophomore Jason Schoener (Grand Blanc, MI) was a few ticks behind in fourth with an IC4A time of 14:34.76, ahead of junior Matt Keally (Virginia Beach, VA), who rounded out the IC4A qualifiers in the race with his pace of 14:35.38 for fifth. Sophomore Anthony Arena (Manassas, VA) just missed the IC4A mark with his career-fast time of 15:01.22 in sixth.
In the 3,000m, sophomore Joel Parker (Portsmouth, VA) led the Tribe's effort with a 8:39.67 as the race featured three W&M middle distance competitors stepping up in distance to start the season. Fellow sophomore Matt Warco (McMurray, PA) clocked a solid 8:42.20 in his 3,000m debut as senior Bill Tarantino (Woodbirdge, VA) timed an 8:46.22 for fourth, a personal record. In the 800m, freshman Ryan Jones (Harrisburg, PA) turned in a solid time of 1:59.38 in his collegiate debut.
Junior Nick Hecker-Thompson (Seattle, WA) claimed second in the shot with a solid throw of 48'10.5" while junior Nathan Chubb (Doylestown, PA) started the season by turning in a solid 13'0" in the pole vault to claim second place.
