Cowart '09 Hits B Standard in 3,000-Meter Steeplechase

PALO ALTO, Calif. – VMI alumnus Donnie Cowart '09 posted a qualifying time for the US Championships, an 8:44.75 clocking, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase held as part of the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational, held Saturday evening in Palo Alto, Calif.

The time was the second-fastest of Cowart's career and placed him 17th at the meet, but more significantly, it eclipsed the B standard of qualification for the 2010 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. All athletes who best the B standard are eligible to declare for the prestigious Championships, but must wait to see if they are selected, as such qualifiers will be chosen only if they are needed to fill out fields.

Last season, Cowart ended his VMI career at the 2009 version of that meet, held in Eugene, Ore. This year, this former Keydet stalwart is continuing his career for the Ragged Mountain Racing Team based in Charlottesville, and is seeking to return to those Championships, which will be held in Des Moines, Ia. beginning on June 23. The meet will be hosted by Drake University in the same facility where another Keydet, Felix Kitur, finished ninth at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
