JMU\'s Herbert, DMR shine at Navy

HARRISONBURG, Va. (12/7/04) – Senior Ted Herbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) and the Dukes' distance medley relay squad each qualified for the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America Indoor Championships during the first weekend of regular-season competition. Both qualifying efforts came Friday at the Navy Invitational, one of three venues the Dukes sent representatives to during the weekend.

Herbert won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 14 minutes and 48.08 seconds in the Halsey Field House. The qualifying standard is 14:50.0. JMU sophomore C.W. Moran (Potomac Falls, Va./Potomac Falls) came in a close second at 14:53.87, a personal-best clocking.

The Dukes' distance medley relay came under the standard time of 10:18.70 with a first-place time of 10:15.64. The unit was made up of junior Evan Kays (Batesville, Ark./Stuarts Draft (Va.)), junior Chris Greer (Annandale, Va./Annandale), freshman Jon Fulginiti (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and sophomore Dave Baxter (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley).

Kays was also a member of the Dukes' second-place 4x800 relay, which came up six seconds short of meeting the IC4A qualification with a time of 7:57.33. Joining Kays on the squad were junior Paul Cawley (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), freshman Chris Ward (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and sophomore Peter Novick (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson).

Junior Allen Carr (Yorktown, Va./York) picked up a fourth-place finish in the 3,000, crossing the finish line in 8:35.75 – the top time of his collegiate career. Sophomore Josh White (Nokesville, Va./Brentville) placed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 43' 2.5".

Junior Mike Durso (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) took fifth in the mile in 4:35.40, directly followed by junior David Bolton (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) in 4:35.68.Freshman Steve Tamburrino (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) placed sixth in the 200 (24.04) and seventh in the 55 (6.87). Junior Nick Noe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) claimed seventh in the 5,000 in a career-best 15:17.57.

Junior Pat Barron (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) cleared 4.50 meters and placed sixth in the pole vault at the Bucknell Bison Opener in Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday. In Lexington, Va., freshman Teddy Kranis (Great Falls, Va./Langley) took fourth and freshman Doron White (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) fifth in the shot put at the Virginia Military Invitational. Kranis heaved the shot 47' 2" to move into sixth all-time on the JMU charts. White's toss of 45' 8.5" ranks eighth.

The Dukes' next scheduled event is the Gulden Relays hosted by Bucknell on Jan. 8.
