VHSL Group AA Indoor State Meet: Bowman breaks national 1000 meter record...2:43.40!

Blacksburg, VA -- Sarah Bowman a senior from Fauquier County set the national record in the 1000m in 2:43.40 as she smashed the old record set by Ari Lambie (2:45.46)of Massachusetts in 2003. I asked Sarah before the race what her plans were and she said she was skipping the 1600m in order to try to get the record in the 1000m. Bowman led from the gun until the finish as she went through the first 200m in 29 seconds, 400m in 62 seconds, and 800m in 2:08.

Sha\' Tia Hart of Courtland was a double winner and received All-State designations in 5 events. Hart won the high jump (5-01.00), and long jump (17-05.25), and was runner-up in the 300m (41.62), 5th in the 55m dash (7.45), and 8th in the triple jump with a mark of 33-11.75. Catherine White of Northside continued her phenomenal year as she added two more State titles to go along with her Cross-Country State Title. White won the 1600m in 5:10.46 and the 3200m in 11:11.02.

Western Albemarle girls claimed the State championship with 72 points while Charlottesville was runner-up with 63 points. The Blacksburg ladies had a dominating performance in the 4 x 800 m relay as they won easily in 9: 46.13. The Lady Bruins also claimed the 4 x 400m relay with a time of 4:05.81.

Lafayette took the boys title as they were led by Dakari Taylor-Watson who was the meet\'s only triple winner. Watson won the 55 m high hurdles in 7.74, the high jump in 6-06.00, and the triple jump in 47-03.75. Watson was State runner-up in the long jump (22-08.50).
