Six Keydets Earn Academic All-State Honors

LEXINGTON, Va. - Six Keydets have been tabbed Academic All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), according to information released by the organization recently.

The six Keydets are: Audrey Falconi (Women's Soccer), Sean McCoy (Lacrosse), Adam Kruithof (Baseball), Hannah Granger (Track and Field/Cross Country), Angela Redmond (Women's Soccer) and Sonny Landry (Men's Soccer)

Falconi concluded her stellar career by helping VMI advance to the second round of the Big South Tournament for the second straight year. She led VMI to its best-ever defensive season as a senior, anchoring the back line as the team posted a 1.06 Goals Against Average. She was named to the VaSID All-State Team and was tabbed the Big South Women's Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year. Falconi also earned the top award given to a VMI student-athlete, the Keydet Club's Three-Legged Stool.

Redmond was another key figure in the Keydets' strong women's soccer season. The junior netminder finished fourth in Division I in save percentage (89.3%), while also leading the Big South in Goals Against Average (0.81). She was voted to VaSID's All-State Second Team, and ranks as the program's career leader in save percentage, Goals Against Average, shutouts and and wins. Redmond also holds Academic Stars and is a multiple-time Dean's List honoree at the Institute.

Landry was one of the team captains for men's soccer, and helped hold together a young back line that featured multiple freshmen throughout the season. He has been strong academically at VMI as well, being a multiple-time member of the Big South Presidential Honor Roll, the VMI Dean's List and also being tabbed Honorable Mention Scholar in the East Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Kruithof was one of several pitchers to make a handful of appearances for VMI this year, as the Keydets powered their way to their highest national ranking in program history. The Charlottesville native was part of a mound staff that tied the school record for strikeouts (441), as well as equaling the third-best strikeouts per nine innings mark in school history. Kruithof is a multiple-time Dean's List honoree, and has been honored for his academic prowess throughout his time at VMI.

Granger earned VMI's first individual cross country championship, winning the Big South title this past season. She dominated the entire year, claiming three of the League's six Runner of the Week awards, and resetting her own school records at the 5K and 6K distances. She also won the 5,000-meters at the Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships, making her the first VMI women's cross country champion, the first VMI female track conference champion (2010 5K) and the first female Keydet to win an outdoor track event at a conference meet (2009 10K).

McCoy ended his VMI career this past season, starting five games and appearing in seven total. He ended his time at the Institute ranked fifth on the program's all-time saves list. McCoy was in net for VMI's storybook 2008 season, when the Keydets earned a litany of firsts in program history. The team advanced to their first postseason tournament, earning a berth in the MAAC Tournament, and also nabbed its first postseason victory, as McCoy was stellar in the Keydets' 9-8 overtime win over #1-seeded Providence. The netminder was also stellar in the classroom at VMI, posting a 3.8 GPA, along with resultant honors, during his four years in Lexington.
