NSIC Day Two: Virginia Highlights

On day two at NSIC, Western Albemarle junior Ashley Early earned All-American honors with a national runner-up finish in the pole vault, while Potomac Senior\'s Kharya Brown has set herself up to have two opportunities to earn All-American honors in Sunday\'s finals by advancing out of the final preliminary rounds of the 60 and 200 meter dash.

The Manchester girls\' 4x200 meter relay team of Shaunte Cotton, Alaina Hite, Kelly Keener, and Carmenta Mitchell advanced out of the prelims of the event as they posted the 10th fastest time overall with a season best clocking of 1:43.14.

After advancing out of the 60 meter dash preliminaries, senior Kharya Brown of Potomac Senior advanced out of the 200 meter dash prelims as well as she was among the 12 that moved onto the next round with a time of 24.69 (9th fastest overall). She also earned her way into the finals of the 60 meter dash, which will be held on Sunday, with a 7.59 clocking in the semi-finals (3rd fastest overall). Brown will now have two opportunties to earn All-American honors on Sunday.

Western Albemarle junior Ashley Early improved by two feet from her prelims clearance on Friday in the pole vault as she tied for second overall in the event to earn All-American honors. While she did not hit her season best and state record setting height of 12-4, a national title seems it would have been out of reach with Mary Saxer of New York hitting a height of 13-06.25 to take the national title.

Two Virginians qualified out of the preliminaries of the boys\' pole vault as James Robinson senior Tyler Tucker and Western Albemarle senior Matthew Early both cleared a height of 13-6.25.

Lake Braddock\'s Jon Cowden finished just under two feet away from All-American honors as he finished eighth in the shot put with a toss of 51-1.
