Frykberg, Lambert lead VCU for second-straight meet

RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Brett Frykberg (Jacksonville, Fla./Tennessee), right, and sophomore Davion Lambert (Richmond, Va./Varina) earned first-place honors for the second-consecutive week in the high jump and long jump, respectively, this weekend at the Fred Hardy Invitational hosted by the University of Richmond.

Frykberg earned the high jump title with a leap of 6-8.75, one week after his NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 6-10.75 last weekend at the Ram Invitational. The newcomer also broke the VCU record in the javelin, coming about a foot-and-a-half from qualifying for Regionals with his third-place throw of 200-9.

Lambert, who also earned a NCAA Regional mark in the long jump last weekend, matched his teammate's multiple successes. He claimed the long jump title with a mark of 23-6.75, and placed second in the high jump behind Frykberg with a leap of 6-4.75. The Richmond native's 45-4.5 mark in the triple jump also earned him a second-place finish.

Nine other Rams also earned top-four finishes at the meet. The 4x100m relay team finished in first with a time of 42.08. Sophomore James Frierson (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) finished third in the 100m and fourth in the 200m with times of 11.06 and 22.03, respectively. Freshman Jackie Deshazo (Mechanicsville, Va./Virginia Intermont) placed fourth in the 100m with a time of 11.07. Both Frierson and DeShazo ran on the first-place 4x100m team.

Sophomore Lukasz Matusiewicz (Warsaw, Poland) placed second in the 800m with a time of 1:51.72 and fourth in the 1500m with a time of 3:54.60. Fellow countryman and classmate Mariusz Mostrag (Krajnik, Poland) ran the 1500m in 3:53.75, good enough for third place.

Junior Riad Ouled (Fontainebleau, France/Francois Couperin) finished in third with a mark of 9:46.32 during the 3000m steeplechase, and freshman Andrew Bailey (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) placed fourth with his 134-8 toss in the discus to round out the top finishers for VCU.

The Rams have next weekend off as they prepare for the Duke Invitational, April 8-9.
