Big South Cross Country Championships Set for Saturday

Women's XC Finishes Fifth in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Behind notable performances from Jenna Moye, Rebecca Sweeney and Leah Schubel, the VMI women's cross country team placed fifth at Friday's Charlotte Invitational, hosted by the University of Charlotte at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, N.C.

Moye was the Keydets' top finisher, placing 28th with a time of 18:14, while Sweeney was 37th in 18:27. In only her second full collegiate race, Sweeney ran more than a minute faster than her personal best from high school. All told, the Keydets averaged 18:41 for the 5K distance, despite sitting out Hannah Granger and Tammy Cheung, who were VMI's top two finishers at last weekend's Big South Preview meet.

The team standings saw Clemson (43 pts.) and Virginia Tech (51 pts.) finish 1-2, with Wake Forest placing third, on the strength of 66 points. Charlotte was fourth (110 pts.), ahead of the Keydets' 198 points.

“I was pleased with the effort from the women today,” said VMI head coach Paul Spangler. “Rebecca Sweeney had another great outing, and Jenna Moye continues to show that she is coming back well. Leah Schubel, however, may have run the best overall race for our team.”

Corinne Lariviere was the Keydets' #3 runner Friday, as the sophomore was 50th in the 248-runner field, on the strength of an 18:43 time. Schubel was 60th in a personal best time (18:53), while freshman Molly Western was 69th in a time of 19:06. Western's classmate Hannah Best was 82nd (19:20), while a third freshman, Dalton Kuhar, was 90th overall (19:30). Katie Purpura posted a 104th-place effort, crossing the line in 19:53, and Nicole Augins rounded out the VMI competitors with a 115th-place effort (20:04). All of the Keydet freshmen, save Best, ran personal best times.

VMI cross country will return to action Friday, Oct. 15 as the Keydets travel to Boone, N.C. to take part in the Appalachian State Invitational.
