Virginia Intermont College freshman Steeve Gabart easily met the national qualifying mark for the 10,000-meters of the U.S. Junior National Track Championships to be held in Carson, Ca, this June. Gabart exceeded the qualifying mark of 32:45.00 by over one minute posting a time of 31:40.02 at the University of Tennessee's Sea Ray Relays last weekend.

Gabart, a native of Miami, Fl, joined the VIC distance team with modest high school marks of 4:34 for the mile and 2:05 for 800-meters, but, according to coach Scott Simmons, he's been improving ever since.

"Steeve is one of those rare young runners who gets it right off," says Simmons. "He has been progressively advancing his training since August and challenging himself to be as good as our older runners. His attitude is great. His lifestyle is great and great things will happen for him."

The U.S. Junior National Track Championships will be held in conjunction with the U.S. National Outdoor Championships June 23-26.
