Keydets Conclude Season at Regional Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The VMI women's cross country team concluded its season Saturday, finishing tied for 21st at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships, hosted by Louisville in Louisville, Ky.

All told, the Keydets were the #3 team from the Big South at the Regional meet, placing behind High Point (19th) and Liberty (10th), while edging Coastal Carolina (23rd). Virginia, North Carolina and Duke were the top three teams, assuring that the Cavaliers and Tar Heels will advance to the national meet in Terre Haute, Ind.

“This was certainly not the result we were hoping for, even though it did match the women's best regional finish in the last several years,” said VMI head coach Paul Spangler. “This was a good season for us, however, and with our youth, we believe we will continue to get better for years to come.”

Hannah Granger led VMI in her final collegiate race, finishing 67th in an even 22:00, while Big South Freshman of the Year Tammy Cheung was 88th in her first 6K event. Cheung clocked in 22:23, 17 seconds ahead of Jenna Moye in 112th (22:40). Rebecca Sweeney and Dalton Kuhar, also competing in their first 6K's, were 149th and 153rd, with times of 23:03 and 23:07 respectively. Leah Schubel was 181st, crossing the line in 23:28, and Lindsey Carty wrapped up the VMI competitors by placing 197th (23:54).

Laura Hoer of N.C. State captured the individual title, putting up a time of 19:54 to claim the regional crown.
