Caroline boys, Chancellor girls roll to victory

FREDRICKSBURG, VA -- The Caroline boys and Chancellor girls cross country rolled to victory as they took this year's Battlefield District titles.

The Caroline boys were led by their top 3 runners who took the top 3 places as well in the race. Junior Matt Gutridge led the way for the Cavaliers as he covered the Loriella Park 5K course faster than anyone else in a time of 16:49. Taking the next 2 places was all Caroline with Chris Gray (2nd, 17:10) and Cord Bise (3rd, 17:29).

The other 3 boys squads to make the top 4 and therefore advance to Region I Meet next week at the 3.05 mile course at Eastern State Hopsital in Williamsburg were King George (75 pts), Spotsylvania (76 pts), and making the last spot was Chancellor (82 pts).

The girls team title was a close one between Chancellor and Massaponax. It was so tight that it came down to the number 5 runners. Massaponax had Chancellor 24-25 when it came down to just top 4, but Chancellor was able to fit their #5 runner in the top 15 with Laura Folse's 13th place finish, while Massaponax's #5 runner finished in 18th. That secured the win for Chancellor and the district crown for them as well.

Massaponax did however get some relief out of having the district individual winner in Stacey Potter who just missed breaking 20 on the difficult 5K course at Loriella Park with her time of 20:03.
