Four-Time All-American Tenths Short in Setting New 5,000m Standard

CARSON, CA - William and Mary's four-time All-American Ed Moran (Dayton, NJ) fell just shy of setting a school record in the 5,000m as the graduate student clocked a sterling 13:25.87 Friday evening at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships. Fresh off earning his fourth All-America honor with a seventh-place performance at NCAAs two weeks ago, Moran clocked the career fast time, besting his old mark by nearly 14 seconds, to fall just a half second shy of eclipsing the school record of 13:25.38 set by 11-time All-American Matt Lane in 2001. Moran's 13:25.87 is the second best in school history, a distinction he already owned after his 13:39.70 earlier this season. This season's CAA and IC4A 5,000m Champion claimed seventh in the 24-runner race with his effort, the highest-finishing amateur in the field which included both professional and collegiate athletes.

The 5,000m was won in meet record time by professional Tim Broe who timed a 13:12.76 as three athletes clocked in within a second of the winning time. Positions four through seven were all in the 13:25 range, as Moran ended the race only .87 seconds shy of fourth place. 2003 W&M graduate Sean Graham, who earned All-America honors alongside Moran in the 5,000m at the 2003 outdoor NCAAs, also competed it the race but did not finish.

Lane, whose 5,000m Tribe record was threatened by Moran, competed in the USATF 10,000m Thursday night, finishing 10th in the 18-athlete field with a 28:44.65.

Also competing at the Championships was Tribe women's track and field head coach Kathy Newberry, who had qualified in the 5,000m with a personal best 15:45.32 from 2004. In her first race on the track in 2005, Newberry finished 15th after timing a 16:27.61.
