Wood Leads Keydets at First Day of Liberty Open

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Runner-up Antonio Wood fell just 102 points short of the first day lead in the heptathlon, and VMI posted a runner-up finish in the women's 4X800-meter relay to highlight the Keydet efforts on the opening day of the Liberty Open, hosted by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

Wood finished no lower than third in any of the four events, the shot put, high jump, long jump or 60-meter dash, and scored 2876 points overall. He leads the third-place competitor by 197 markers, and Wood is also ahead of teammates Michael Munson (8th place) and Dennis James (6th place), who is competing in his first collegiate multi-event.

Wood's efforts were highlighted by a 1.96 meter (6'5”) effort in the high jump, which was second-best in the competition, as well as a 6.59 meter long jump (21'7 ½”). James also had a notable effort, winning his specialty, the high jump, with a leap of 2.05 meters (6'8 ¾”).

Meanwhile, the women's 4X800 relay, comprised of Leah Schubel, Lindsey Carty, Molly Western and Jenna Moye, clocked in at 9:49.12 for their runner-up effort. The performance continues Moye's strong start to the season, after the sophomore broke the school records in the mile and the 3K in her first two meets, and also continued the Keydets' strong 4X800 efforts, following the men's team running the #3 time in the country last weekend at Virginia Tech.

Senior Aquisi Harris made her season debut Friday, placing sixth in the weight throw. Harris threw the implement 14.16 meters (46'5 ½”) to post that result.

Zipporah McCann was also in action Friday, finishing eighth in the pentathlon with 2806 points.

VMI track and field will return to action Saturday, competing both at the final day of the Liberty Open in Lynchburg and at the UCS Spirit National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev. Liberty's events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
