Davis Wins Two Events to Lead Keydet Men at Winter Relays

LEXINGTON, Va. – Cody Davis won both the shot put and the weight throw, leading the VMI men's track and field team at the annual Winter Relays, held Saturday at Cormack Field House in Lexington.

Davis opened the day with the weight throw victory, tossing the implement 16.21 meters (53'2 ¼”) to defeat runner-up, teammate Chad Lawson, by just over a foot. Later in the day, Davis returned to post a 15.25 M (50'0 ½”) winning effort in the shot put.

“The Winter Relays has been a staple in our schedule for over fifty years,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “Having 17 teams was really outstanding, as it gave all our athletes a chance to go against good competition, and I believe we came out of this meet exactly where I hoped we would be.  We have a couple of athletes that are still working hard to get healthy, but I saw many promising performances today. Between the two teams, we had 20 top five finishes and five victories, and any time you have those numbers with this many teams here, it's a good day.”

Also prevailing for VMI was Antonio Wood, who won the long jump by the slimmest of margins. Wood's winning effort was 6.66 meters (21'10 ¼”), while both the second and third-place competitors jumped 6.65 M (21'10”).

The Keydets also had three runner-up finishes. In addition to Lawson's efforts in the weight throw (15.90 M/52'2”), Ademola (Dada) Titcombe and Noah Hagos earned those results. Titcombe was the top collegiate finisher, and runner-up overall, in the triple jump, with a seasonal best of 14.41 M (47'3 ½”). Hagos was second in the mile, posting a 4:32.46 clocking.

“On the men's side, I thought Cody Davis has a good day, with his two victories and seasonal best efforts. Noah Hagos' outing in the mile was a very good one, as he has been working hard to get healthy and his efforts showed,” said Coach Webb. “Antonio's win in the long jump, after his outstanding IC4A heptathlon qualifier last weekend, was very strong, and Dada Titcombe continues to get healthy, as he improved on his previous IC4A qualifying performance. I also thought James Alexander and Gabe Itoka's times in the 55-meter dash were solid.”

In that 55-meter dash, Alexander and Itoka clocked in at 6.59 and 6.61 respectively, earning the seventh and eighth finishing positions. Finally, Lawson was third in the shot put (13.87 M/45'6 ¼”), while Terrance Green had top five finishes in both the long (6.60 M/21'8”) and triple (13.38 M/43'10 ¾”) jumps.

Also, Hayden Hodges, Jordan White and Will Thompson were all in the top seven of the 3,000-meter run.

VMI track and field will return to action next weekend, as the squads travel to Akron, Ohio to take part in the Akron Invitational. Action is scheduled to get underway Friday.
