The Middle School State Championships are here and that means it is time to check out who are the favorites. This weekend there will be four team competitions going on. They will be the club (boys and girls) and school (boys and girls) team competitions.
Let's start with the school teams.
In total there were 40 school teams who scored last year with the top five being Stafford, St. Chris, Marsteller, Danville, and Forest. Those teams also returned quite a few who are entered this weekend.
On paper though it looks like St. Christopher's and Elizabeth Davis are the teams to beat. Elizabeth Davis were your cross country state champions this past fall.
For the club teams, it really is anyone's competition with points being fairly spread out. For example, East End Lightning is looking for sprint points while Commonwealth Throws will be focused on the field, all the while Studley Stingers and XC Elite will be battling it out in the distance. It should be a close competition there.
In the girls' competition our top five from last year was John Rolfe, King George, Tomahawk, Robious, and Christiansburg.
On paper entering the weekend Hugo A. Owens has some qualify point potentials while a team like Blacksburg could pick up points in almost any event. Glenvar has potentially quite a few field scorers and don't count out any of the teams who placed highly last year too.
In the club competition Faith In Action will be hard to top but Studley Stingers, East End Lightning, and maybe even Speed Evolutions might be able to score more.
