Cavaliers Compete at NCAA Championships

Women and men both take 26th place

In a year that marked the first time that both the Virginia men\'s and women\'s cross country teams earn berths to the NCAA Championships, it was perhaps fitting that both teams took home the same place. Both the men and women finished 26th at the meet held in Terre Haute, Indiana. Both squads are populated with underclassmen, with only one fourth year between the two teams and none scoring.

For the young men, it marked the first year that Virginia earned an automatic bid to the Championships. \"The fact that we earned the automatic bid is a great place to start,\" said head coach Jason Dunn. \"All five scorers from this year\'s meet are back next year, and that experience will be extremely beneficial to us.\" As has been the usual all season, the seven men finished within 52 seconds of each other, a strong pack that helped the ACC Champions win their first conference title.

On the women\'s side, Emily Harrison and Kara Scanlin finished 1-2 again, as they have all year long, but the injuries that beset the women were tough to overcome. Like the men, however, no fourth-years scored for the Cavaliers and in fact three of the five scorers were second-years and first-years.
